Cardiff is the capital of Wales and Cardiff Airport is the only international airport in Wales. Located in the village of Rhoose, Cardiff Airport opened for business as RAF Rhoose in early 1942, when it was used as a pilot training airport and was home to RAF Spitfires.
In the early 1950’s Cardiff Airport (RAF Rhoose) became the main civil airport to service Cardiff. All civil flight from Cardiff Municipal Airport (RAF Cardiff) were transferred to Cardiff Airport (RAF Rhoose) and Cardiff Municipal Airport was closed. On 1 April 1965 the Ministry of Aviation handed over the airport to Glamorgan County Council and it was renamed Glamorgan (Rhoose) Airport. The council started a five-year plan to develop the airport including a new control tower, terminal building and a runway extension. In the 1980s, its name was changed to 'Cardiff-Wales Airport'.
