1909, Blackpool Airport was the first aviation site in the UK
In 1939 Blackpool Airport was taken over by the Air Ministry and developed for the Royal Air Force. Three runways were built at Blackpool airport along with hangars and ammunitions stores. Around the same time Vickers built a factory, where they built nearly 4000 Wellington bombers, amougst others, all of which were test flown from Blackpool Airport's existing runways.
Blackpool Airport was also a base for Spitfire fighters, largely to protect the city of Liverpool from raiding German bombers.
